Trend – noun – a fashion.
Style – noun – a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.
I recently read a blog post of a well known interior designer where they shared their “top trends” and things they’d like to see “go away” in 2015. Interesting. I guess because they’ve done it, it’s done and that’s it? But is it really a trend? Things come and go and often times come back (hello wallpaper, hello brass). While they’re “gone” does that mean that we can’t still use them? I guess that is a matter of style and taste.
Take Jackie O’s 1953 wedding dress. Iconic, some might say. So iconic that Anne Barge recreated it in 2011 and many others have custom recreated this look for their weddings today.

Or what about wallpaper! I know kids of the 70’s that had wallpaper in their homes and HATED it! But guess what, that same old wallpaper is adorning the walls of some of their houses today. This Banana Leaf Wallpaper is a case in point!

The number one thing I tell my clients is that there is no such thing as a trend. If you like something and it feels good to you, do it! I say this, and I mean it, as I live this way in my personal life as well. My home is filled with things I love and I am often times “breaking the rules of design”, but I don’t care, cause they make me happy! Now, if the question was, “What are some things I would like to see in 2015 with weddings & interiors”, my answer would be, “more originality”. Just cause it’s in a magazine or on a popular blog doesn’t mean you have to do it. Make your wedding/event unique to you, make your home special to you, and don’t worry about the rules you are potentially breaking. Life is too short to worry about what other people are thinking. Break the addiction of the approval of other people!
The blog post that I read also suggested that stripes were out. {{Faints}}. Stripes have been around FOREVER (hello Beverly Hills Hotel and your iconic striped ceiling) , and they aren’t going anywhere any time soon. At least I don’t think they are.

Now, if you know anything about me, you know that I am a SUCKER for stripes. So that comment hit me like a bag of bricks. I’m sorry popular blogger, but I strongly disagree with you there. Maybe you don’t like them, but stripes most certainly aren’t “out”!
Another decor love of mine is the use of unexpected elements (I have a giraffe in my house- I will share one day soon). My house is filled with quirky things that I’ve picked up in different places along the way. So imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon this image of @samsidney‘s on Instagram… Makes me go Gah-Gah! She painted her hallway in pink & white stripes and she hung this little beauty up on the wall. Her entire house is filled with things she loves and I love it! Now, if taxidermy isn’t for you, there are plenty of beautiful faux animals on the market for you to hang instead…
I imagine high-fiving that beauty every time I go up the stairs! She says she talks to him while she does the laundry. Fun!
And here are some of the stripes that make me happy in my own home, my daughters “glam dressing room” (pro pics coming soon). What’s important is that you design with what you love. As long as it makes sense to you, it’s ok.
I hope you enjoyed my rant, I’ll be back really soon (maybe)!
